How does the belt pouch actually deploy?
One hand, from the support side, using the same arm motion as an expandable baton. These are DSM’s own instructions for the Detective Model carrier, and the belt and pocket pouches follow the same motion:
- Support side. The carrier rides where your support hand reaches it without crossing you over or tying up your strong hand.
- Out with the support hand. Grasp the carrier and bring it out of the pocket.
- Grip over the banner pocket. Your grip lands over the outside banner pocket and the grab handle, not across the middle of the carrier.
- Press it against your side. That pressure opens the flap of the banner pocket for you.
- Throw the arm. Holding the grab handle, the weight of the case does the work and the banner opens out.
- Elbow through, over the head. Onto your primary, strong-side shoulder.
- Straighten it. One quick pull to sit it flat, and the word is readable front, side and back.
How hard is it to get the banner back into the case?
Five steps, and only the fourth one decides how fast your next deployment is. This is the half nobody films.
- Lay it out. The length of the banner away from the case, above the opening of the outside banner pocket.
- Zig-zag fold. Back and forth on itself, using the width of the pocket as your guide for the fold length.
- Slide it in, handle on top. Grab handle sitting on top of the folded banner, facing the velcro strip.
- Roll the handle over the velcro. Then fold the flap closed. This is what keeps the handle in the same place every time instead of letting it work its way down inside the pocket where you would have to go looking for it.
- Check the bulge. Packed correctly, the grab handle sits just under the velcro strip and makes a slight bulge you can feel. That bulge is your confirmation.
Sling Sleeves
A banner identifies the torso. A sling sleeve identifies the thing an officer is most likely to be judged by from a distance (the weapon on the sling) by putting the designation on the strap itself.
